Pets that are not groomed every 4 to 6 weeks may become matted. Not grooming your pet regularly will cause some health issues in your dog. For those dogs that require haircuts, it’s even more important to maintain regular grooming to avoid any matts causing health issues.
Matting refers to densely tangled clumps of fur in your pet’s coat. If your pet is not properly and/or frequently brushed and not being combed through prior to getting wet, loose and live hair become embedded in large masses. Matts can sometimes be combed out, however if left too long, it can be impossible to remove without seriously harming your animal.
Matts can be formed in the outer coat as well as the deeper undercoat. The most common mistake is not recognizing that your pet has severe matts forming in the undercoat and are unnoticeable because of the heavy outer coat.
Severe matting can be extremely painful to your dog. Brushing only causes live hairs to be pulled out of the skin with excruciating pain. Even mild matts can be very painful to brush out. Matting can deny regular air circulation. When skin is denied the air and stimulation from regular brushing, it becomes quite unhealthy for our pet. Skin can turn dark pink or red, and open sores are apt to form emitting foul odors. Even organic matters such as branches, and plants can be tangled in the matts irritating the skin.
When matting is severe and/or close to the skin the only humane way to remove the mats is to clip the coat off to the skin line. It is possible a nick can occur since the fur is pelted to the skin.
In some cases where the matting is not severe and only covers a small area, we can remove them by splitting, thinning and then brushing them out. There is a fee of $65 an hour to de-mat your pet. Severe matting may require longer . Matted coats are hard on our equipment and in most cases require two haircuts, the first to remove the matted coat prior to bathing and a second to even up the coat after bathing.
Pucci Pet Spa will not be held responsible for health issues caused from matting and will not be held liable for clipper cuts, nicks, rashes or burns created by clipping the matted dog.
